Who's behind the scheme?

Animal Liberation is a non-profit organisation run by volunteers who believe that animals have the right to exist free from any form of exploitation. All animals.

Not just human beings, cats, dogs, whales, cuddly little koalas and pretty animals that make us smile, but life in all it's strange (and sometimes ugly) forms. We also value the lives of animals that we've been conditioned to think of as food - chickens, pigs, hens and “farm animals” of every kind.

All animals have one thing in common - they can suffer. "Farm animals” can feel pain, hunger, thirst and emotions just like your dog or cat. You wouldn’t treat your dog or cat poorly. Why should you pay someone to treat battery hens poorly? Every animal has the capacity to suffer, and therefore every animal has the right to exist free from cruelty and all forms of exploitation by human beings. Especially the unbearable cruelty of factory farming.

We believe that the only way to achieve this is through a vegan diet and a lifestyle that is free from all animal products. Because of this belief, we do not endorse the consumption of eggs of any kind.

So why do we run the audit scheme?

Because we understand that many people don’t share our point of view (yet!), and that people will continue to eat animal products for a whole range of reasons.

Because we understand that it will take time for people to overcome years of indoctrination and learn that a vegan diet and lifestyle is not only a mark of respect for the animals that share our world, but better for our health, the health of our families and the most positive step you can take towards dealing with environmental catastrophes such as global warming, pollution and water shortages.

And because we know that hope is on the horizon.

We know this because we understand that many people (just like you!) care enough about the horrors of factory farming and the terrible plight of battery hens to be reading this page. We know that you’re looking for ways to reduce your impact and buy eggs that have been produced under more humane conditions, and we respect that decision and the positive step that you’ve already taken towards reducing animal cruelty and helping to remove battery hens from their horrific prison cells.

We want to help you take that step, and we believe that you have a right to truthful product labelling and honest advertising. You should be able to trust the brand that you buy and know that you're getting exactly what you think you're paying for. Every time!

So we started a scheme that you can trust.

You can be sure that every carton of eggs that has been accredited by Animal Liberation has been produced according to the highest welfare standards, and that the producer does not have any involvement with battery farming.  We think this is very important, so that you can be sure that your money will not help to support the horrific war on chickens in any way.

But most of all, we run this scheme because we can all agree that HENS DO NOT BELONG IN CAGES, and that battery farms are sick and disturbing examples of human greed and cruelty at its worst. Anything that we can do to help remove hens from battery cages is worth doing.

That’s why we continue to operate the scheme and why we created this site.

But what's in it for us?

Animal Liberation operates the scheme off the back of volunteers. It costs both time and money to administer the scheme, and we do not receive any fees, commissions, donations or benefits from any of the producers or anyone involved in the egg industry to help cover those costs.

Instead, we gladly run the scheme entirely as a community service, because you have a right to know what you’re buying, and because hens have a right to freedom and a better life than this.

And because happy, healthy hens certainly don't look this.

Anything that we can do to help put a stop to this is reward enough. Need we say more?
